The "grand dame of Austin fashion", Gail Chovan is celebrated
for her ongoing body of design work, for her provocative and often theatrical
shows, and for the award-winning creativity of her retail boutiques, Blackmail
and Vivid.
Born and raised in New Jersey, Chovan discovered her passion for clothing and design during years spent in Paris, while earning her Masters degree in French literature. She subsequently studied at ESMOD Guerre-Lavigne and received a degree in fashion design.

After several more years designing and showing in Paris, Chovan returned to the
United States to launch her own clothing lines, eventually opening Blackmail in
1997. The store was expanded to include Vivid in 2004. Chovan's work and
boutiques have been featured in local and national publications.
Chovan lives in Austin with her husband, artist and sign maker Evan E. Voyle. They have a Doberman named CoCo Chanel du Noir.
